Que o cigarro faz muito mal \u00e0 sa\u00fade, todos j\u00e1 sabem. Inclusive, para os olhos. Por exemplo, a fuma\u00e7a \u00e9 um fator de risco para v\u00e1rias doen\u00e7as como a s\u00edndrome do olho seco, glaucoma, catarata e degenera\u00e7\u00e3o macular relacionada \u00e0 idade (DMRI).<\/p>\n

Mas agora um estudo realizado no Jap\u00e3o revelou que a fuma\u00e7a tamb\u00e9m pode causar a morte das c\u00e9lulas da c\u00f3rnea dos fumantes ativos e tamb\u00e9m dos passivos.\u00a0A pesquisa foi publicada recentemente no peri\u00f3dico Sientific Reports<\/a>, vinculado \u00e0 Revista Nature.<\/p>\n

Cigarro e olhos – a pesquisa<\/h2>\n

Cientistas da Universidade Farmac\u00eautica Gifu, no Jap\u00e3o, criaram em laborat\u00f3rio culturas de c\u00e9lulas do epit\u00e9lio da c\u00f3rnea humana e expuseram parte delas a um extrato da fuma\u00e7a do cigarro e do aerossol do PTA, que continham a maioria dos ingredientes inalados pelos fumantes.<\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s 24 horas, o n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas mortas nas culturas expostas \u00e0 fuma\u00e7a e aos aeross\u00f3is foi maior do que em compara\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0quelas que n\u00e3o interagiram com as subst\u00e2ncias.\u00a0Ao entrar em contato com os componentes do cigarro, a ferritina dentro das c\u00e9lulas oculares se decomp\u00f5e, liberando o ferro armazenado.<\/p>\n

Os resultados<\/h2>\n

A exposi\u00e7\u00e3o aos componentes da fuma\u00e7a do cigarro gera um ac\u00famulo de ferro, que mata as c\u00e9lulas do epit\u00e9lio da c\u00f3rnea. A mesma rea\u00e7\u00e3o foi observada com o aerossol produzido pelos produtos de tabaco aquecido (PTA). Embora diferentes dos cigarros eletr\u00f4nicos, estes tamb\u00e9m exigem um dispositivo eletr\u00f4nico para o uso e nem sempre v\u00eam com nicotina.<\/p>\n

Geralmente, a fuma\u00e7a do cigarro n\u00e3o provoca problemas permanentes. Contudo, a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o cont\u00ednua pode causar ferimento na c\u00f3rnea, como o leucoma e at\u00e9 levar \u00e0 cegueira.<\/p>\n

Apesar dos resultados importantes do estudo sobre cigarro e olhos, ainda s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rias mais pesquisas, principalmente em seres humanos, para confirmar os achados.<\/p>\n
