Desse total, 39 milh\u00f5es s\u00e3o completamente cegas. Os dados constam no relat\u00f3rio &#8220;As Condi\u00e7\u00f5es da Sa\u00fade Ocular no Brasil 2019&#8221;, elaborado pelo Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia (CBO).<\/p>\n<p>Por aqui, o Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estat\u00edstica (IBGE) estima que aproximadamente 1,5 milh\u00f5es sejam cegos. Isto \u00e9, 0,75% da popula\u00e7\u00e3o brasileira.<\/p>\n<p>Por\u00e9m, h\u00e1 uma nova pesquisa que pode ajudar os pacientes permanentemente com cegueira. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41551-019-0446-8\">Publicada recentemente no peri\u00f3dico Nature Biomedical Engineering<\/a>, o estudo criou um novo modelo de eletrodo intraneural que estimula diretamente o nervo \u00f3ptico e, desse modo, gera a sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de luz ao paciente.<\/p>\n<p>Quer saber mais como funciona essa nova tecnologia? Ent\u00e3o, continue lendo este post para entender como o trabalho foi desenvolvido, os resultados e quais ser\u00e3o os pr\u00f3ximos passos.<\/p>\n<h2>A pesquisa<\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Os cientistas da Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL), da Su\u00ed\u00e7a, e da Scuola Superiore Sant&#8217;Anna, da It\u00e1lia, elaboraram um novo modelo de eletrodo intraneural, nomeado de OpticSELINE, que circula o globo ocular e manda mensagens diretamente ao c\u00e9rebro por meio do nervo \u00f3ptico.<\/p>\n<p>O est\u00edmulo da regi\u00e3o produz fosfenos &#8211; sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de ver a luz por meio de padr\u00f5es brancos, mas sem v\u00ea-la diretamente. Com isso, esse dispositivo pode auxiliar as pessoas com defici\u00eancia visual a ter mais qualidade no dia a dia, uma vez que muitos indiv\u00edduos apresentam o nervo \u00f3ptico e sua conex\u00e3o com o c\u00e9rebro intacto e funcional.<\/p>\n<p>Para voc\u00ea entender melhor, a nova tecnologia possui uma matriz com 12 eletrodos que entram diretamente no nervo \u00f3ptico.\u00a0Os pesquisadores mediram a atividade do c\u00e9rebro no c\u00f3rtex visual por meio de testes em coelhos.<\/p>\n<p>Ao final da avalia\u00e7\u00e3o, os cientistas observaram que cada eletrodo forneceu um padr\u00e3o \u00fanico no c\u00e9rebro, sugerindo que a estimula\u00e7\u00e3o intraneural do nervo \u00f3ptico \u00e9 seletiva e informativa.<\/p>\n<h2>Os resultados<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Acreditamos que a estimula\u00e7\u00e3o intraneural pode ser uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o valiosa para v\u00e1rios dispositivos neuropros\u00e9ticos para restaura\u00e7\u00e3o da fun\u00e7\u00e3o sensorial e motora&#8221;, afirma Silvestro Micera, pesquisador envolvido no estudo.\u00a0&#8220;O potencial de tradu\u00e7\u00e3o dessa abordagem \u00e9 extremamente promissor&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Vale lembrar que, em meados de 1990, foi realizado um estudo que tamb\u00e9m testou essa t\u00e9cnica. Por\u00e9m, os eletrodos eram do nervo do manguito: r\u00edgidos e que se movimentam, tornando inst\u00e1vel a estimula\u00e7\u00e3o el\u00e9trica das fibras nervosas. Al\u00e9m disso, \u00e9 prov\u00e1vel que tenham seletividade limitada porque recrutaram fibras superficiais.<\/p>\n<p>Por ser uma pesquisa preliminar, a percep\u00e7\u00e3o visual por tr\u00e1s desses padr\u00f5es corticais permanece desconhecida. \u201cPor enquanto, sabemos que a estimula\u00e7\u00e3o intraneural tem o potencial de fornecer padr\u00f5es visuais informativos.\u00a0Ser\u00e1 necess\u00e1rio o feedback dos pacientes em futuros ensaios cl\u00ednicos para ajustar esses padr\u00f5es.\u00a0De uma perspectiva puramente tecnol\u00f3gica, poder\u00edamos fazer testes cl\u00ednicos amanh\u00e3\u201d, relata Diego Ghezzi, tamb\u00e9m pesquisador do estudo.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclus\u00e3o<\/h2>\n<p>De fato, a pesquisa mostra um novo caminho para o tratamento de pessoas com defici\u00eancia visual, especialmente as cegas.
