Cr\u00e9dito: Johnny Tam\/National Eye Institute.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A coroideremia afeta mais os homens do que as mulheres porque o gene respons\u00e1vel pela doen\u00e7a est\u00e1 localizado no cromossomo X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Como os homens t\u00eam apenas uma c\u00f3pia do cromossomo X, uma muta\u00e7\u00e3o no gene faz com que os homens desenvolvam sintomas mais graves, enquanto as mulheres \u2013 que t\u00eam duas c\u00f3pias do cromossomo X \u2013 geralmente apresentam sintomas mais leves, tendo uma c\u00f3pia ativa do gene no outro cromossomo X.<\/p>\n<p>Uma das principais descobertas do estudo foi que as c\u00e9lulas RPE est\u00e3o maiores e disfuncionais em at\u00e9 cinco vezes em homens e mulheres com coroideremia.<\/p>\n<p>As participantes do sexo feminino mostraram uma mistura de c\u00e9lulas RPE maiores e de apar\u00eancia mais saud\u00e1vel.
